Coffee and Focus: What Actually Matters

Coffee's most obvious acute cognitive ingredient is caffeine. People often experience increased alertness, but response depends on dose, habitual use, sleep, timing and individual sensitivity.

Focus is not one outcome

Alertness, reaction time, sustained attention, memory and subjective energy are different outcomes. A study showing an effect on one should not automatically be generalized to all “brain performance.”

Why more isn't always better

Higher caffeine exposure can increase unwanted effects such as jitteriness or sleep disruption in susceptible people. Poor sleep can then undermine next-day attention, creating a cycle that another cup does not necessarily solve.

Continue to caffeine & cognitive performance, coffee jitters, and coffee crash.
